Famous colours carried

Colours famous more than 45 years ago were seen in the winner's circle at Hororata on Saturday. The black and white stripes, gold sash and cap formerly associated with W. J. Tompkinson, who died in 1734, were worn by Michael de Filippi when he drove Cardon Royal to win the Selwyn Handicap. Chardon ROyal is trained by Stephen O'Brien, aged 34, a grandson of Tompkhinson. O'Brien has dabbled in trotting for several years, but only took out a licence to train at the start of this season.

"My grandmother kept the colours going for years, but they lapsed after her death," said O'Brien on Saturdav. "I registered them when I was granted my training lieenc," he added.
