Netball Absences hit senior teams
The absence of the New Zealand netball trialists made ft difficult to gauge the strength of the senior teams playing at Hagley courts on grading day on Saturday. Hagley A was especially affected and will be during the season after the announcement of the New Zealand team to play in the fifth world championships in Trinidad and Tobago in August. All three Hagley players, Christine Pietzner, Genae Katae, and Janice Henderson made the national team — a great achievement from one club side. Sacred Heart loses Heigh Mills to the national side and Technical will be without Maxine Blomquist. Of the 12 players selected, five are from Canterbury, two each from Waikato and Wellington, and one player each from North Shore, Auckland, and Otago. Senior teams to win on grading day were St Nicholas, Sacred Heart A and B, and Burnside B. Burnside A drew with Hagley. Much interest centred on the promotion-relegation game beween Burnside B and St Nichalas B, which had the challenge for right of entry into the senior grade.
Burnside B had a comfortable win, showing superiority in all facets of play. It deserved to retain Its place in the senior competition . Last season’s competition winner, Technical A, went down to the 1978 runner-up St Nicholas. Once again the Impeccable shooting of Ann Davidson gave strength to the St Nicholas side and on defence Barbara Kreft was able to take the rebounds from Vicki Patterson and swing play St Nicholas's way.
The Sacred Heart A and Rlccarton match was close, as was Sacred Heart B and College. All four teams were evenly matched which should make for hardfought encounters during the winter montns.
Players to stand out were Wendy Heta for Sacred Heart A, Diana Sullivan for Sacred Heart B, Karen Ericson for Riccarton, and Jane Eddington for College. Alice Bendal, the goal defence for Burnside B, could well be named the player of the day after working tirelessly and very effectively in the promotion-rele-gation game and again to help her team record a slender win against Cashmere B.
Results.— Promotion-relegation (senior): Burnside B 36, St Nicholas B 25. Senior reserve: Technical B 33, New Brighton 25. Senior. —St Nicholas A 37, Technical A 28. Hagley A 18, Burnside A 18; Sacred Heart A 37, Riccarton A 34; Sacred Heart B 24, Teachers’ College A 19; Burnside B 25, Cashmere A 24.
