M.P.s’ travel
Sir, — The use by D. A. Carter (April 4) of the emotive word, “harassment” to describe the addressing of a perfectly justified question to the Prime Minister by a television interviewer, suggests that the Prime Minister’s apologists share his sensitivity to the merest whisper of criticism. Any conjecture on the response of a Soviet Prime Minister to such questioning by a television interviewer founders because of the impossibility of imagining a Soviet aspirant to representation in his country’s Supreme Soviet, of Mr Muldoon’s cavalierly arrogant manner towards subordinates whom he regards as vulnerably inferior to himself, ever finding anyone misguided enough to nominate and second him as a candidate. I heartily concur with the sentiments of D. A. Carter’s last sentence with a slight but vital alteration: democratic freedom must be tempered by a degree of responsibility and consideration for others, especially by the Prime Minister. — Yours, etc., M. CREEL. April 4, 1979.
