Paparoa national park
Sir, — Just who are the “we on the West Coast” that Steven Jarvis (April 4) presumes to speak for? There is not, and cannot be, one West Coast view on issues such as the Paparoa national park proposals. He holds one view; I, another West Coaster, hold a different one. Even without “outsiders,” Coasters would still be deeply divided on these issues. Steven Jarvis entirely misses the point made by P. S. Grant about the West Coast share of private land. Mr Grant’s figures served to correct an impression which had been given that West Coasters had less private land than other New Zealanders. Most of the lands mentioned by Steven Jarvis, the mining and forestry areas, and some of the farmlands, are State-owned. Use of them by West Coasters is additional to our not - insignificant share of private land. —Yours, etc., r. g. McAuliffe, Greymouth. April 5, 1979.
