Boilermakers’ fines paid
All 12 boilermakers fined by the Canterbury Boilermakers’ Union for working on the third Wellington container crane for their employer, New Zealand Structures, Ltd, have paid a fine of $250 each, according to the union’s secretary (Mr L. E. Wilson-Parr) yesterday.
The men were fined for breaking an alleged “black" ban on the crane, and a special meeting of the union last week had given them until yesterday to pay the fine or face expulsion from the union. The manager of New Zea-
land Structures (Mr P. S. Burrowes) said that if any of his employees could not pay the fine they could negotiate with the company for help. No action has yet been taken against the company by the trade-union movement. Mr Burrowes said there was “dialogue” between himself and both the Canterbury Trades Council and the Federation of Labour. A meeting of union officials involved in the issue would be held at Wellington on April 10.
