Inquiry into notaries
Scotland Yard has replied to a query about a firm which has offered to trace the connections of several Christchurch persons to estates in England.
A number of Christchurch residents with the surnames of Baker, Bennett,' and Barber, as well as. others in Wellington, received letters from the firm last week. They were written under the name of Crawford, Harrowby, and Partners, corporate research notaries, and asked a fee of $35 for inquiries to start. Scotland Yard said the firm was not a registered company and was run by an Australian who arrived there on May 9 for six months. He intended to apply to become a British citizen. Until further inquiries into the company and the authenticity of the estates were completed, recipients of the letters were advised not to send money to the company.
