Romney ram sells for $2200
“The Press** Special Service INVERCARGILL, Jan. 19. The top price, $2200, was paid for a Romney ram at the Southern Provinces fifteenth annual ram fair in Gore yesterday. Bred by the nation-ally-known Romney breeding partnership of D. H. Robertson and Sons, Merrydowns, Gore, it was bought by the j Waiorongomai stud, Featherston.
The two Canterbury breeders with rams entered I did not have much of a day. Rannoch Trust, of Darfield, and the Estate G. S. Giddings, of Fairiie, with 14 rams between them made no sales in the ring. I However, there was some ; activity from Canterbury j buyers. E. R. McConnell, of [Timaru, paid one of the J better prices of the sale at i $l3OO for a ram bred by A. T. Ottrey and Son, Sherwood 'Forest, HerioL ! Of the 156 Romney rams
entered only 59 were sold in the ring; they returned $35,850. Two Border Leicester rams were entered by an Ashburton breeder, N. W. Scott, but they failed to make the required money in the ring. The Heriot breeders, A. T. Ottrey and Son, made the top average price of $971.00 for seven rams.
The largest number of rams sold was on account of D. H. Robertson and Sons (Merrydowns), who sold 12 of the 20 offered, realising $9200. Other breeders to have a good day were J. N. Brenssell and Sons. Ferndale, Moa Flat, who sold 10 rams, for $6200. Only 11 rams made $lOOO or more. The second-highest price was $l6OO received by the Merryvale Trust, Leedsvale, Gore. This ram was sold to the Carterhope Estate, Balclutha.
