Theft from ship’s safe

When Captain Georges Juricic, master of the French motor vessel .Capitaine Wallis examined the safe in his cabin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Lyttelton he discovered that a large sum of money was missing. This was made up of 214,000 French francs (about SNZ2OOO), $lOO U.S. and $lOO Australian. The Captaine Wallis left Vila, New Hebrides, on January 9 with a cargo of logs for Lyttelton. The money was last seen in Vila, where the safe was examined on January 7. The ship has a total crew of 25 including the master. Both the master and chief engineer are French, but the remainder of the ship’s company is nearly all Fijians. The Lyttelton police searched the entire vessel and questioned ail the crew before the ship sailed yesterday afternoon.
