Triumphs described to aid Games fund
A recording and accompanying booklet containing highlights of past Commonwealth Games will be put on sale next month, as an Invercargill contribution towards the 1974 Games fund.
It is anticipated that $lO,OOO will be raised towards the Games from the first printing—so,ooo copies. They will be distributed by the Invercargill Jaycees in co-operation with the Bank of New Zealand. Sixteen memorable performances from past Games are described on the recording. They range from the marathon victory of J. Peters (England) and the one-mile duel between R. Bannister (England) and J. Landy (Australia) at Vancouver in 1954, to the gold medal triumphs of the New Zealand cyclist, B. Biddle, and the Scottish 5000 metres runner, I. Stewart, at Edinburgh two years ago.
The other successes recorded are those of H. Elliott (Australia, 1958), P. G. Snell (New Zealand, 1962), M. G.
Halberg (New Zealand, 1958 and 1962), K. Keino (Kenya, 1966), Miss A. Hoffman (Canada, 1966) and Miss P. Kilburn (Australia, 1962) in athletic events,- the Australian rowing eight and New Zealand four in 1962, and the swimmers, M. Rose (Australia 1962) and Misses J. Grinham (England, 1958), A. Lonsbrough (England, 1962) and D. Fraser (Australia, 1958). The booklet tells the history of the Commonwealth Games, gives a list of goldmedal winners and has a section giving brief biographies of “supreme competitors.’
Sales of the record and booklet—they will retail at sl—will be launched at a formal dinner in Invercargill on February 11. The guest speaker at the dinner will be the Australian athlete, R. Clarke.
