Rope Seen Again

It is unlikely that an attempt to recover the bodies of the four men lost on Mount Rolleston in June will be made for several weeks.

Depending on the weather, an attempt might be made a little before Christmas, the national park ranger at Arthur’s Pass (Mr P. Croft) said yesterday. The rope, which inspired hope for the lives of the men, was seen again by Mr Croft a few days ago. He said it was not dangling over the snow chute where it had been in June.

Routine inspections of the Mount Rolleston face had been made every two weeks, but falling snow and dangerous avalanches made it impossible to get near to the area where the bodies were believed to be, Mr Croft said.
