Thunderina Has Surprise Win

•‘The Prtsi” Special Service DUNEDIN. Considering her lack of recent form Thunderina was surprisingly well-sup-ported in the George Bruce Memorial Handicap at Oamaru on Saturday. In a reasonably fast-run race, the honours rested with her, for in a battling finish she held on to win by a neck.

A spring winner at the Kurow meeting on the track In August and placed at Methven three starts back, Major Pip ran on best to tvin the Weston Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. He was not fancied in the betting and paid £23 for a win, but he was a little better supported in the double, which paid £ll5 2s 6d for £l.

Nocatchem made a game effort to reach the lead with a round to go. but was forced to race three wide to the three furlongs. She shared the lead with the pacemaker. Golden Garry, but was quickly mastered by Major Pip, which had enjoyed the run of the race.

Flying Step had difficulty work, mg clear in the straight and lodged her challenge with half a furlong to run. She faii’.ed to finish off her effort and tired a little in the end. Snow Chief, which lost ground at the start, was fourth, ahead of Mon Amie, which was badly placed all the way.

Newport Maid was running on next after being well back in the running. Why Not made th* running, and at the furlong it seemed that she might hang on, for although Winfield Chief and Thunderma had closed on her neither was doing much better m the last 50 yards. Thunderina inched ahead to win by a neck, and Winfield Chief was a nose better than why Not. This trio was well clear of Raven Song, which had tracked Why Not for the last mile and a half.

Eyreton. which was not far away in the running, plugged on for fifth.

Bass Strait came next, and all things considered his effort was fairly good. He was squeezed for room at the start, which was perfect for the limn horses, and dropped back to the rear, having only the 36-vard horses, Super Glow and Tuarangl Chief, behind him. He stayed there until the three furlongs, swooped round the field on the turn tor home, but had nothing left in the final furlong. Abbey Frost was just ahead of Bass Strait in th* race, and never improved. Ngaitahu wrecked her chance shortly after the start, and was I tailed'off throughout.
