Everything Wrong In Gore Last Race

"The Press” Special Service

INVERCARGILL. To say that the first day of the Gore Racing Club’s spring meeting on Saturday ended on a note of confusion would put it mildly. A short time before the last race was to start a power failure put the photo-finishing camera and the course speakers out of action. The judge placed Bellburn, Cherokee Brave, Disciple and Glocca Morra visually in that order. With the camera not in use, the correctness of the placings were readily’ questioned.

Disciple looked to have won from Bellburn, Cherokee Brave and Heavenly, an opinion confirmed by the riders concerned. The confusion was aggravated when an objection was lodged against Bellburn being placed first on the grounds of interference at the straight entrance. The public was unaware that an inquiry was under way and with the power failure still persisting, the club was unable to make an announcement.

Bellburn was later relegated from first to fourth, Cherokee Brave first, Disciple second and Glocca Morra third. Heavenly, which should have finally been put up to third, was not mentioned at any stage. It was at a belated hour when the official change of placings was given out. Many people made a frantic —and futile —search for win tickets on Cherokee Brave and place tickets on Glocca Morra that had been thrown away. The judicial committee, which dealt with the Bellburn objection, had not finished an adjourned inquiry into the finish of the previous race, the Flying Handicap, in which Red Sash, which had finished second, was relegated to third. Bellarook, which had been interferred with 50 yards out, was promoted to second.
