Prince Callan Form Horse At Rangiora

Prince Callan and the New Zealand Derby candidate, Pacemaker, are selected to win the on-course double on the second day of the North Canterbury Racing Club’s spring meeting today.

They are top-weights j in their races, the Par- ) sons Memorial High- ; weight and the Spring- I bank Hack Handicap.

Prince Callan earned favouritism for the highweight with his win in the corresponding race on the first day of the meeting. Pacemaker has not raced since his close second in the Dunedin Guineas, but his fitness was apparent when he ran at the race trials at Rangiora last week. Other strong fancies in minor races today are the stablemates Pretentious (Sefton Maiden) and Not Guilty (Inglewood Hack Handicap). Pretentious was another impressive performer at the Rangiora race trials last week, and Not Guilty ran Prince Callan close in the highweight at Rangiora a fortnight ago.

Not Guilty is bracketed with Cosmetic, another fit hack in D. J. Thistoll’s team. The prospect of a firm track

today could give Royal Bid a, slight edge over Manana in I the Beehive Brandy Thou-1 sand, the first leg of the T.A.B. double today. Manana won his last three, races on easy or soft tracks—j conditions that showed him to j best advantage. His weight-carrying powers will be put to the test today and he should find his 9-6 formidable when attempting to beat Royal Bid, a stayer well up to weight with some outstanding firm-ground form. Manana’s stablemate, Time an'’ Tide, is one of the form runners in the North Canteri bury Handicap, second leg of . the T.A.B. double. i Kalimera narrowly beat him on the first day of the meeting, but he came through the race with much credit after having run keenly at the girth of his pace-making stablemate, Shipmate, to the home turn. Kalimera will oppose Time and Tide again today, but a stronger runner for G. S. I Barr’s team this time could be Danny Kaye, a brilliant galloper on firm tracks, and a last-start winner at Orari.
