Amusement Park Safety
Sir,—Now that a new year of A. and P. shows is with us, may I draw attention to the low standard of maintenance of the merry-go-round at the Leeston show last Saturday? This consisted of horses and cars in which small children could sit. The steering wheel on some of these cars had slipped down the steering column, leaving a sharp length of protruding steel on which a child could be injured. I consider the gentleman running this merry-go-round was not giving sufficient time for the price charged.—Yours, etc., INTERESTED. October 18, 1966. [The acting district superintendent of the Department of Labour (Mr A. B. Tuck) replies:—“As from September 1,1966, all amusement devices are required to be registered under the provision of the Amusement Devices Regulations, 1965. A prerequisite to registration is the examination of the device and the issue of a certificate by a registered engineer. Inquiries will be made concerning the reported defect.”]
