Terrific Cups Favourite

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) MELBOURNE. Terrific has been made the early 10/1 favourite for the £16.000 Caulfield Cup, to be run on October 15. The rising four-year-old also shares, with Prince Grant and High Principle, favouritism for the £24,000 Melbourne Cup at Flemington in November. Bookmakers framed their first market after weights were issued. They made Palisade, the aged New Zealand top-weight in the Melbourne Cup, 33/1. He has second top-weight of 9-5, 11b less than Cratfsman, for the Caulfield Cup, for which his price is 50/1. Palisade is almost nine. Connexions were pleased with the weights given Terrific. He has 8-12, 21b less than weight-for-age, in the Caulfield Cup, and 8-10, 41b less than weight-for-age, in the Melbourne Cup. The New Zealand mare, Chantal, is one of the best-weighted horses in the £16,000 Epsom Handicap to be run at Randwick on October 11 and is certain to be one of the early favourites. Chantal headed the New Zealand entries in the race with 8-4 when handicaps were declared on Sunday. The Waikato trainer, J. P. Hayes, arrived in Sydney recently with Chantal, but the mare has not yet raced.
