Brighton Defeats Rex
Playing very good basketball, Brighton beat Rex, 21-14, in the senior women's indoor basketball competition last evening and thus moved into second place. In the other matches. Checkers easily beat the young Teachers' College team; Rebels beat Stars, by one point, and Y Girls beat Ranglora. • Results were:— Brighton 21, Rex A 14: Rebels 24, Stars 23; Checkers 55, Teachers’ CoUege 12. Brighton v. Rex From the outset of play It was obvious that both teams were evenly matched. Some close defensive play kept shots to a minimum but H. Hutton’s fine goal from a rebound put Brighton on the board. Rex retaliated with a fine lay-up but Brighton was combined well on attack and making use of good passing to position players for a shot at goal. Only brilliant guarding by J. Taylor managed to restrain the Brighton score. Many fine movements were seen from Brighton In the first half, but few were completed with goals. This lack of success with shots kept the score low for most of the game. A spurt of scoring by B. Ross and H. Hutton Increased Brighton’s lead in the second half but after this shots at goal fell well short of the mark. A determined bid to put Rex back in the game, by J. Taylor, who shot two beautiful goals in quick succession, failed when
she was unable to gain the support needed from her side and as Brighton's play lapsed with the absence of P. Millar with an injured ankle, Rex had every opportunity. Over eager guarding caused many fouls and play deteriorated temporarily. More constructive play from A. Boalee, B Ross and H. Hutton put Brighton back In control and although Rex tried hard in the last few minutes its efforts were to little avail and Brighton ran out well deserved winners. Topj scorer: H. Hutton (Brighton) 8. Rebels V. Stars Rebels came from behind in the final stages of the game to snatch a one-point victory over Stars. Stare took control of play from the beginning and cut through the zone defence maintained by Rebels with ease and ability. With L. Dobson in good shooting form Its score mounted quickly. A change to player-to-player defence by Rebels In the second half proved the turning point in the match and with L. Dobson well contained on attack the Rebels team was able to counter the Star attack. Successful penalty shots In the last stages of play were the deciding factor and Rebels finally emerged the winner. Top ocorero: L. Dobson (Stars) IS. B. Curry (Rebels) 9. Checkers v. Teachers’ College The competition leader, Check-
ers, was far superior to College In every phase of play and ran out easy winners. The College defence was unable to cope with the fine attacking combination of J. Baker, S. Chamberlain and A. Archer, who netted goals with monotonous regularity. The aggressive defence played by Checkers completely demoralised the College attack and Checkers gained possession with repeated Interceptions. Top scorers: J. Baker 18. S. Chamberlain 12. A. Archer 10 ■ Y Girls v. Ranglora Although not winning by an overwhelming margin, Y Girls looked the superior combination. Fine defensive rebounding by D. Morrow gave Y Girls early opEortunlties and goals by J. eask and J. Partridge put them ahead. Determined play by J. Taylor and C. Reuben kept Ranglora tn the game but poor passing on attack often proved costly. Better team combination again proved to be Y Girls strength and with every Player combining well to feed tne accurate Partridge and M Coulson it ran out good winners Top scorers: J. Partridge 11. M. Coulson 8.
