Boos At Split Decision
(N.Z. Press Association> AUCKLAND. A storm of booing greeted the announcement that the amazingly fit Australia, Bobby Dunlop, had beaten John Houston, of the United States, only by a split points decision over 10 rounds at Auckland last night.
Dunlop had shown speed and skill early in the light heavy-weight bout, and courage and stamina later. Tt seemed Houston would need a knock-out in the last round to win and he attacked with everything, but Dunlop held him at bay. One judge, Mr H. Shields, had Houston ahead by one point, but the other judge, Mr R. Gould, had Dunlop eight points ahead. The referee, Mr R. Lyall, gave Dunlop the verdict by two points.
Americans Win.—Before a crowd of 2000, the San Jose men’s basketball team from California, overwhelmed Waikato by 106 points to 26 at Hamilton last night. The Americans led 42-13 at the interval.
