Chathams Airport Being Planned
(From Our Own Reporter)
WELLINGTON, July 25.
The provision of an all-weather airport for the Chatham Islands is in the planning stage, but it may be some weeks before plans are acted on.
Earlier this year, a surveying and engineering team from the Civil Aviation Department spent some time in the Chathams evaluating airstrips and carrying out close examination of the available sites. This work was advanced enough to allow a costing to be made. This team has yet to make a detailed report to the interdepartmental committee which has been studying the problem. The committee consists of representatives of the Civil Aviation Department, the Department of Internal Affairs, and the Treasury. It is believed that a site quite close to Waitangi has been selected, and that it has been found suitable for development to a standard necessary to allow the use at full capacity of DC3 and Bristol Freighter aircraft, with future development to suit even heavier types. Costing details, which have yet to be received by the com-
■ mittee, will determine to i which stage the aerodrome . will be developed.
