ROAD ON COAST’

Money For Survey The Minister of Works had approved a grant of £3OOO towards the cost of an aerial survey for a road linking Buller and Golden Bay, the South Island Local Bodies’ Association was told yesterday. Mr W. N. Martin (Westport) told the executive that when completed the road would form the final link of a highway right around the South Island. It would open up some of the finest fertile country in the South Island, he said. Mr H. Riley (Golden Bay) said the new road would enable tourists to travel north from the Haast Pass to the top of the island passing through some of its best but relatively unknown scenery. The road would aid the development of Westport, making it an overnight stopping place for tourists on the West Coast. The move to have the road built had been encouraged for many years although there had been some division of opinion as to which route it should follow. Mr Martin said the Westport council would be prepared to accept whichever route was found to be the best from the survey.
