AUSTERITY DAY
Soup And Rice For Students University of Canterburystudents ate their midday meals with mixed feelings on Thursday. The only choice on the menu was thin oxtail soup and rice. It was austerity day and the meal, meagre though it was, was probably better than that of the average Asian. The appeal was sponsored by the University Students’ Association in recognition of the severity of the Indian famine. The association will collect all the money raised yesterday for the Operation 21 campaign. Similar appeals have been held at other New Zealand universities. The meal was arranged with the co-operation of the University of Canterbury caterers and diners were charged 2s. Chopsticks were available to those who wanted them at the city campus. All other meals, served throughout the day were Is dearer. Any students who violently object to the appeal will have their money refunded. The student vice-president, and organiser of the appeal committee at Canterbury (Miss P. B. Macnab) said yesterday that the response had been excellent. Many of the staff had eaten the austerity meal, although some students had gone elsewhere. At the Ham cafeteria, the University Folk Music Club entertained between midday and 2 p.m. In a similar appeal at Victoria University, Wellington, earlier this year, more than £3OO was raised.
