Public Service Has 300 Occupations To Offer

The Government will make a special effort next week to attract prospective school leavers, university graduates, and undergraduates to careers in the Public Service. At the Durham Street Art Gallery 30 departments will present mobile or static displays of the work they do. Included in the Ministry of Works display will be a model of the extensions to Parliament Buildings. The district officer of the State Services Commission in Christchurch (Mr A. O. Dare) said yesterday that of the 1200 occupations listed from census figures, the departments concerned in the display could offer 300.

Mr Dare said the purpose of the display was to let people know what jobs were offering in the Public Service and to attract the best possible applicants. The principal mobile exhibits at the display, which will open on Tuesday and close on Thursday, will be presented by the Ministry of Works, the Department of Civil Aviation, Department of Labour, New Zealand Electricity Department, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and Marine Department. More than 20 other departments will present static displays. The Police Department, though not officially included in the display within the ambit of the State Services Commission, has been invited to take part.

The Post Office, New Zealand Railways Department, New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation, and other large organisations are not represented and will conduct their own recruiting campaigns. Mr Dare said the display would be the biggest ever held in Christchurch to promote employment in the Public Service. In conjunction with the display, an essay competition for pupils of the upper forms of secondary schools will be conducted. The subject of the essay is “The Public Service as a Career.” The winners of the competition will be given a week-end at the Hermitage, with all expenses paid.
