WOOLSTON BAND
Funds Still Needed Although it is now sponsored by a city firm, the Woolston Brass Band will still have to earn a considerable amount to meet its average expenses, says the treasurer (Mr D. A. Anderson) in his annual report. The grant will cover only part of working expenses, he says, and its advantage could be quickly dissipated if profits from Christmas stocking raffles declined, and the band decided to attend all national contests instead of forgoing one or two as in the past. Mr Anderson describes the levying of subscriptions from band members towards the the cost of running the band hall, as “a waste of time.” A large proportion of previous years’ subscriptions had to be written off last year as uncollectable, he says. Hall expenses were more than £365 last year. Instead of charging the auxiliary band for the use of facilities, the senior band should retain the whole of the sponsoring fiirm’s grant, he recommends. “The auxiliary band expenditure exceeded income by £79 during the year, and it would appear that they will have to make greater efforts to raise more income if they are to be able to finance their attendance at future national contests, as well as providing for the eventual replacement of instruments and uniforms. "The senior band had a fairly successful year financially, with a surplus of income over expenditure of £306, even though income dropped by about £222 from the previous year’s figure,” Mr Anderson says.
