Renewed Giving For Town Hall

Renewed interest in Christchurch Town Hall Promotion’s fund-raising efforts since the results of the architectural competition were announced has produced £3OOO in gifts, bringing the total to £175,000, Mr H. G. Hay, chairman of the finance committee of the organisation, said yesterday.

Town Hall Promotion had] been greatly heartened by a gift of £lOOO from the trustees of the estate of Mr Levi Blood, Mr Hay said. The trustees had j been impressed by the win-| ning architects’ plans and said they realised that the project would benefit the whole community. Mr Hay said many business firms which had deferred decision about gifts had recently reconsidered the matter. Some had already sent in contributions and others would be submitting proposals to board meetings. Town Hall Promotion was pleased with the initial response. The recent decision to recognise gifts of more than £lOO by a small plate on seats in the town hall apparently appealed. Ten such gifts had been received recently and others earlier numbered 200. In the last fortnight £9OO had been paid in on promises made earlier. Mr Hay said Town Hall Promotion was particularly keen to reach individuals who might not know where to send gifts. These could be sent to the City Treasurer at the Christchurch City Council chambers. Gifts received recently were:—J. Ballantyne and Co. Ltd., £500; Vibrapac Blocks,

Ltd., £300; Winstones (5.1.), Ltd. (2nd donation); £250; E. C. Gough, Ltd., £125; Mr and Mrs Geoffrey Wood, £100; 5.1.M.U., £100; Geo. O. James (N.Z.), Ltd., £100! R. and E. Tingey, Ltd., £100: Wormaid Bros. Industries (N.Z.), Ltd., £100: Don Agencies, Ltd., £5O; Thos. L. Jones and Son, Ltd., £5O: C. B. Norwood, Ltd., £5O; Mr G. D. Wills, £25.
