BEER THE ENEMY

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) MELBOURNE, July 22. Beer is one of the worst enemies of the Reserve Bank of Australia. The general manager of th e note issue department of the bank, Mr W. H. Wilcock, said today that many notes were ruined by beer spilt on them on bar counters. But, he said, the new decimal notes appeared to be lasting better than the old currency. “The paper used is exactly the same, but a

resinous substance called melamine has been added to give the notes extra wet strength,” he said. “At this stage the decimal notes seem to be more durable. “The average life of a 10s note is five months; the £1 note, nine months; the £5 14 months; and the £lO 32 months. “If is now five months after C Day and the dollar notes are coming back for destruction more slowly than anticipated," he said.
