REVOCATION OF RESERVE
Department To Reconsider The Lands and Survey Department would thoroughly re-examine its proposal to revoke the scenic reserve at Governors Bay, the assistant District Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr M. J. Fitzgerald) said yesterday. Mr Fitzgerald was asked to comment on several letters to the editor of “The Press” criticising the department’s proposal. “In the light of the number of objectors, we are looking at the whole matter again,” he said. The decison to revoke the area as a reserve had been based on a report which questioned the scenic value of the reserve. The report had said the reserve had “negligible” scenic value. Mr Fitzgerald said objections had already been raised by the Mount Herbert County Council, the Forest and Bird Protection Society and several private residents of Governors Bay. The objections arose after the department advertised in the newspapers on June 18 and 25 its intention to revoke the reserve. Mr Fitzgerald said the reason why the department had advertised was to find out if there were any objections.
