BOYS’ BRIGADE APPEAL

More Than £l2OO Raised

About £1250 had been contributed by the Canterbury battalion to the Boys’ Brigade appeal, said the brigade's publicity officer (Mr W. Bishop) yesterday. The appeal was held from July 1 to 8. Mr Bishop said that although three companies had still to hand in their totals it was unlikely that the final total would exceed that of last year. Last year the Canterbury battalion contributed about £1548 of the national total of £11,572. About 11 of 23 companies had raised more money than last year, not because membership had increased, but because the boys had worked harder for the money. “The general trend this year has been for the boys to organise some form of project, rather than just ask for money,” he said. “The sixth Christchurch company this year has almost doubled its contribution by cleaning cars and organising a bottle drive.”

He said that members of the first Christchurch company had sold sweets at a football match, and boys from the second Christchurch company had cut and sold firewood.

Each company would keep about three-quarters of the money it had collected, and the rest would go to the national administration in Wellington, said Mr Bishop. ,
