R. PURDON’S TEAM
Jewel Derby In Work
“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND.
The former Alexandra Park favourite, Jewel Derby, Is now being trained at Pukekohe by K. purdon.
Purdon said yesterday that if Jewel Derby kept sound he probably would race at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting towards the end of September.
The gelding, which is nearly 14, suffered ligament trouble after racing at Alexandra Park last October and was put out of training. At his only other start for the season he finished second on the same course.
Purdon's team of 15 includes five unraced horses. The others are Swartz Pete, Golcourt, Boy Trust, Henwdod's Pride, Lightning Scott. Lonesome Valley, Amend, Superior Chief, and Governor Frost. AU are in great heart, according to Purdon. Lightning Scott was trained during the 1965-68 season by R. P. Norton.
Purdon said he had thought of taking some of his tight-class horses to Addington for the Metropolitan Club's meeting next month.
“But the limit of 2min 12sec for the main race on the first day is not very attractive for horses on 2min llsec," he said.
“Swartz Pete. Lonesome Valley, Golcourt and company will resume racing at the Auckland meeting."
