Manana Sprints Keenly

Manana, a strong Riccarton hope for the Winter Cup this year, showed he had thrived since his one start at Trentham with a keen sprint on his home track yesterday.

He appeared to act well in the heavy conditions while running seven furlongs on the No. 7 grass in Imin 22 2-5 sec. This was two seconds faster than most of the others timed over that distance. After a fairly steady opening three furlongs, B. Collins allowed the Fair’s Fair gelding to sprint the final three in 39 2-ssec. Those with more immediate engagements tried at six furlongs included Sabell. Hawkins, Takatua, Natter and Mogambo. Sabell (C. Kirkvliet), which will contest the first leg at Washdyke on Monday, recorded Imin 24 4-ssec, and 41 l-ssec for the final three. Hawkins (B. Stechmann) and Skye (C. Kirkvliet) took

Imin 25 l-ssec, the opening three faster in 41 4-ssec. Takatua (G. W. Mein) ran six furlongs with his stablemate, Dowmanca (R. Murphy) in Imin 24 4-ssec, the final three furlongs in 42sec. Natter (N. Cowles) produced one of the better solo runs by the Washdyke candidates when she sprinted six furlongs in Imin 24 3-ssec, the last three in 41 3-ssec. She may be one of the improvers in the first leg of the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s double. Mogambo (W. H. Beck), another Riccarton runner in the first Claremont Handicap, was much too good for the non-winner, Play Fairer (M. McCann) over six furlongs. Mogambo was keen to increase his lead of a length and a half in the straight. They ran the first three furlongs strongly in 40 4-ssec. Mogambo recorded Imin 24 sec for the distance. Mogambo has freshened since he failed at Ashburton in June, and may be a prospect at long odds for one of 'the places at Washdyke.

Other gallops on this small track were nondescript. Gallantly (B. Collins) and Newbury (R. A. Williams) stayed on terms in a run over four hurdles, and jumped cleanly while working up to a fair pace.
