Son Follows His Father In Submarines
A young lieutenant serving in the British submarine, Tabard, now at Lyttelton, has begun his service in submarines like his father. He is Lieutenant P. D. Luce, aged 25, the Tabard’s navigating officer, whose father is Admiral Sir David Luce, Britain’s Chief of Naval Staff and First Sea Lord until early this year. Admiral Luce resigned from the top naval post in disagreement with the British Government’s announced plan to scrap the Royal Navy’s aircraft carriers by 1968.
The Minister of the Navy (Mr Christopher Mayhew) also resigned at the same time for the same reason.
Admiral Luce began his naval career in submarines in 1927 and commanded three before the Second World War. Lieutenant Luce has sailed in two submarines, the Tabard and another on which he served in the Mediterranean.
He was trained at Dartmouth as a submarine specialist.
