Weapons And War
Sir, —The ardent advocacy by T. M. Shaw of the outdated, discredited doctrine, “To ensure peace you must prepare for war,” is entirely contrary to the facts of history. Unarmed Quakers lived in peace with the Indians while armed settlers suffered rapine, murder, and burning of homesteads. The safest frontier in the world, that between America and Canada, is undefended: the most' strongly built and defended line of defence, the Maginot Line, proved useless in 1940 T M. Shaw writes: “Man is still in a state of evolution.” He always will be. Evolution has brought mankind from cannibalism and slavery to the ideal of disarmament. This ideal may be attained within the next hundred years or so. The alternative to disarmament is total destruction. — Yours, etc., SETH NEWELL. July 20, 1966.
