AUSTERITY DAY
Indian Famine Appeal An austerity day to raise money for the Indian Famine Appeal will be held at Canterbury University, in conjunction with other New Zealand universities, today. The money raised will go to Operation 21. The council of the New Zealand University Students’ Association, recognising the severity of the famine in India, announced recently that the austerity day would be held in all universities on July 21. In the Canterbury University cafeterias, an extra charge of Is will be made on all meals costing over 2s. Persons who object to this charge will be refunded their money tomorrow. With the co-operation of the caterers, a special aus-' tertty meal has been arranged to be served between midday and 2 p.m. This meal will consist of rice and thin soup, and chop sticks will be available for those who wish to use them. All the profits from this meal will go to the appeal. The University Folk Music Club will give a concert between midday and 2 p.m. at the Ilam cafeteria, and the Jazz Club will perform on the town site. Donation tins will also be placed in hostels and staff and student cafeterias. In a similar appeal earlier this year, Victoria University collected £3OO, and it is hoped to exceed this total at Canterbury University today.
