RUSSIAN ENTRY
For what is believed to be the first time a Russian horse has been accepted for entry into the General Stud Book. This is Zabieg, winner of the Soviet Derby in 1960 and for the last two seasons standing at a stud in Ireland. The official decision marks the successful outcome of two years of intensive research and voluminous correspondence.
Bred by the Russian Government Stud No. 33 Woschod, Zabieg has a pedigree which in part is purely Russian, going back over the last 200 years. But on his male side he traces to Speculum through Sunstar, while among the well-known horses which stem from the female line are the Cheltenham Gold Cup winners Kerstin and Linwell. Zabieg travelled perhaps more miles than any other horse during his racing career. Besides many outings on Continental tracks he was taken to the United States for three starts in the Washington International. He was third In 1960 and fourth in 1961 and 1962. He changed hands after the 1962 races and was sent to Ireland for the 1965 covering season.
