Unfit To Plead

Press Association i AUCKLAND, July 19. A 22-year-old man, charged with setting fire to two churches and breaking and entering a third, was found unfit to plead by Mr C. E. H. Pledger. S.M., when he appeared in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court this afternoon. Mr Pledger committed the man, whose name was suppressed, to be kept in strict custody under Section 32 of the Mental Health Act until the pleasure of the Minister of Justice was known.

Mr Pledger has earlier heard evidence from two doctors on the. question of accused’s fitness to plead. Accused, who was represented by Mr J. B. Sinclair and Mr H. Fulton, was charged with wilfully setting fire to St. Albans church, Waingaro, on May 21: wilfully attempting to set fire to St. James’s Anglican church, Ardmore, on June 19: and wilfully setting fire to St. James's church on June 11 and breaking and entering the Brookby church on June 7.
