Four N.Z. Fellows Women

New Zealand, the first country to make grants from its Winston Churchill Memorial Trust has selected the most women—four out of 10—in the first year of the award scheme.

Australia has made 48 grants, including 10 to women, and Britain recently selected 66 fellows, of whom 13 are women. The three countries are the only ones to have announced grants so far. The first move in establishing the fellowship fund in countries within the Commonwealth and the United States, came from the Eng-lish-Speaking Union in London. After the appeal was launched in Britain, however, a special organisation was established to handle the trust. The union is virtually the headquarters for visiting fellows. It offers them honorary membership, full use of fa-

cilities and any advice they need without “organising” them. “We have been most impressed by the type of person selected for fellowships,” the director-general of the union (Mr M. A. Barr) said recently. “From my own observations I feel sure they are making the best of their opportunities.”
