GOOD START TO SERIES
Rangers Beat Hawks
Rangers won the first match of the Ashby Bergh Rose Bowl series when they beat Hawks by nine goals to seven in a fast and even Ice hockey match played at the Indoor Ice Rink on Monday night. There was little between the two teams, and both sides turned on an Impressive display of teamwork and stick handling. Apart from the goalies, who both played spectacular games, no one player stood out, and al. most every goal came from either a passing movement or good positional play. An unusual feature of the game was th* way the goal* came, in pairs. Rangers scored first, end a minute later Hawks equalised. Play swung backwards and for. wards for most of the period until the last few minutes when Rangers scored again. Play had barely resumed when Hawks attacked and equalised again. The second period followed the same pattern, with Rangers scoring and Hawks levelling the scores again within a minute, and the second period ended with the score at five all. Both sides scored twice more In the early part of the last period and it looked as if the result was going to be a draw. Rangers scored their eighth goal halfway through the period, but from the ensuing face-off they again leapt to the attack and scored again to break th* pattern. Hawks tried hard to catch up, but the Rangers fell back into defensive plays and blocked out every attack. Scorers were:—Rangers: Th Fisher 3. B. Dando 2, M. Cotter 2, S. Pluck, J. Hanning. Hawks: B. Irons 2, M. White 2, M. Wickes, N. Hole. G. Bainton. Referees: Messrs B. Lester and H. van der Velden.
