JOHNSON’S SUPPORT
Low Opinion Poll Rating (N.Z.P. A. -Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, July 19. President Johnson’s popular support remains today at a comparatively low 54 per cent, the Louis Harris public opinion poll reported. It said that, although there had been a public rallying behind the President for his decision to bomb the oil depots near Hanoi and Haiphong, his popularity had suffered from his handling of domestic issues.
The poll reported that the civil rights problem had been costly to President Johnson in the South, where his overall racing was just under 50 per cent.
Correspondent Leaves.—Mr Ronald Robson. 46-year-old correspondent of the British Broadcasting Corporation in Central Africa, left Salisbury by road last night for neighbouring Zambia after being ordered to leave the country.—Salisbury, July 19.
