Lighting-up Time
Sir, —I was amazed to read in your “Auto Gossip” column, advice to light up early. There are few more consistent pests on the road than the (fortunately few) irresponsibles who turn their lights on while there is still good visibility. The lights are no help to the irresponsibles, but do form a great hazard to oncoming drivers.—Yours, etc., SAFETY FIRST. July 18, 1966. [A.J.P. replies: “The correspondent’s remarks belie his nom-de-plume. As has been said many times, the purpose of lighting up ‘in good tim,’ (the words used in ‘Auto Gossip’) is to make your ve hicle more visible to other road users: if the lights are correctly adjusted they should not dazzle. The ‘irresponsibles’ are those who fail to switch on their lights until visibility is reduced to 200 yards or so.”]
