Manapouri Power
Sir—For years New Zea land Governments have been lured on by the mirage of an immense lake of overseas funds becoming available to New Zealand if Manapouri power is sold cheap for smelting aluminium. At last it must be realised that we have no surplus power; what we sell at a low price must be replaced at a higher price. The cost of power, like that df labour, continually increases It is unreasonable to supply Comalco at a fixed low price on a long-term agreement, while power boards may be charged many times more. Parliament has had two opportunities of correcting the error; the first when the original Bill was before the House, the second when Comalco wished to surrender its rights under the Act. Now that the desert of power shortages has become visible under the mirage, let us repeal the Act. We have paid Comalco’s expenses and owe them nothing.—Yours, etc., ARTHUR LUSH. July 19, 1966.
