64 Drowned This Year
To June 30 this year, 64 people were drowned in New Zealand, according to a survey made by the National Water Safety Committee. Of these, 16 were drowned in the sea; 15 in rivers, streams, and other running waters; five in ponds, pools and other areas of static water; four in harbours; three in lakes and lagoons; three in swimming pools: and one while fishing off rocks.
Seventeen of the people were drowned in boating accidents. Eight of these occurred in lakes and lagoons, five in rivers, three in the open sea, and one in a harbour. Most of those drowned were aged between 31 and 40.
