Woman Charged With Murder

(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, July 18. A man died from bullet wounds received in a hut at Te Anau this morning, and in the afternoon a woman was arrested and charged with murder.

She will appear in the Invercargill Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

The dead man was: James Peter Joy, aged about 26, a workman.

Mr Joy was living in a Fletcher Construction Company, Ltd. hut, one of several bordering the Automobile Association (Southland) camping ground. The company has a £297,000 contract for the rebuilding at the Te Anau hotel, and believed that Mr Joy had been working on the job. Superintendent J. H. Alty, officer in charge of the Southland Police District, headed an Invercargill police team which went to Te Anau in the morning to investigate the death.

He said that just before 10 a.m. a woman living in the Te Anau camping ground reported to the manager of the ground, Mr C. N. Tauri, that

a man had been shot in a Fletcher hut. Mr Tauri went to the hut, where he found Mr Joy on the floor. It is thought that the man was found lying on the floor of the hut, still conscious, but bleeding profusely and that Mr Tauri applied first aid in an effort to stop the bleeding. He then rang the Te Anau police. Mr Joy, though conscious, was unable to speak, and it is believed that he died between Te Anau and Lumsden.
