Upsets At N.I. Titles

(N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE. The North Island table tennis championships, which ended at Gisborne on Saturday, were marked by upsets in the men’s open singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. G. Frew, of Northland, the No. 4 seed in the open men's singles final beat M. Dunn, of Auckland; 18-21, 21-17, 21-15, 21-10. Frew used forehand and backhand chops in outstanding defensive play against Dunn's powerful backhand drives. N. J Houlihan, of Northland, and D. L. Wade, of Poverty Bay, number two seeds in the open women’s doubles, beat the number one seeds N. Traill, of Northland, and J. B. Boswell, of Franklin, 21-19, 21-18, 21-15. Dunn and Houlihan beat G. A. J. Frew, of Northland, and N. Trail In open mixed doubles, 14-21, 21-12, 21-19, 21-19. The unseeded Hamilton girl. Miss M. Rolston, fully extended the top seed, Mrs N. Traill, of Northland, before she went down, 14-il, 11-21. H-21.
