Canterbury Wins Table Tennis
An Otago team without B. A. Foster and Miss V. E. Braumann proved no match for Canterbury in the annual table tennis match held in Dunedin during the week-end. Canterbury won, 19-9.
Canterbury won 10 of the 12 men’s matches, and although the women’s matches were drawn, Canterbury won on games. J. Armstrong was in poor form and lost his match to W. Scott in straight games. C. Tilby had trouble with his coordination and lost his second singles matches, to B. Kendall. The women’s events were more closely contested, but Mrs M. J. Shadbolt was in exlent form and neither of her singles opponents reached double figures in either game. The mixed doubles matches went to Canterbury, 3-L Results were:— Singles Men.—J. Armstrong beat B. Collett, 11-21, 21-16, 21-14; lost to W. Scott, 16-21, 13-21. V. N. Brightwell beat Scott, 10-21, 26-24, 21-31: beat Collett, 21-14, 21-15. C. W. C. Tilby beat Y. Chan, 21-14, 19-21, 21-19; lost to B. Kendall, 21-18, 18-21, 11-21. H. P. Holt beat Kendall, 23-21, 21-18; beat Chan, 21-13, 21-16. Women.—Mrs T. May beat Miss P. Otway,'2l-19, 21-15; beat Mrs M. Barnes, 21-9, 21-10. Mrs M. J. Shadbolt beat Mrs Barnes, 21-9, 21-9; beat Miss Otway, 21-7, 21-7. Miss J. Simmons lost to Miss C. Leith, 13-21, 21-23; beat Miss B. Laing, 21-9, 21-19. Mrs J. Loudon lost to Miss Laing, 17-21, 9-21; lost to Miss Leith, 21-19, 18-21, 7-21. Doubles Men.—Armstrong and Holt beat Scott and Collett, 21-17, 17-21, 21-12; beat Kendall and Chan, 21- 21-17. Brightwell and Tilby beat Kendall and Chan, 21-12, 22- beat Scott and CoUett, 21-17, 21-17. Women.—Mrs May and Mrs
Shadbolt beat Mrs Barnes and Miss Otway, 21-9, 21-14; lost to Miss Laing and Miss Leith, 22-20, 18-21, 17-21. Mrs Loudon and, Miss Simmons lost to Miss Laing and Miss Leith, 17-21, 9-21; lost to Mrs Barnes and Miss Otway, 21-17, 17-21, 17-21.
Mixed.—Tilby and Mrs Shadbolt beat Collett and Miss Otway, 21-18, 21-15; Armstrong and Mrs May beat Scott and Mrs Barnes, 21-23, 21-15, 21-14; Brightwell and Miss Simmons beat Kendall and Miss Laing, 20-22, 21-14, 21-19; Holt and Mrs Loudon lost to Chan and Miss Leith, 17-21, 19-21.
