No Crocodiles Earthquake risks are preventing the Auckland zoo >from importing crocodiles to replace those that died recently. A condition for obtaining a licence to import crocodiles is that they must be housed in an earthquakeproof building to make sure they do not escape and breed 1 unchecked. The zoo director, Mr D. Wood, said that he had received offers of up to a dozen crocodiles from European and American zoos but they cannot be accepted. Cloudy And Mild The weather in Christchurch yesterday was mild, with cloudy skies. The temperature at the airport at 8 a.m. was 34 degrees but by 9 a.m. it had dropped to 33 degrees. By noon it had risen to 46 degrees and the maximum of 51 degrees was reached between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. The temperature recorded on the Government Life clock at 4 p.m. was 50 degrees and the maximum temperature recorded during the day at the Botanic Gardens was 49 degrees. Saturday’s maximum at the airport was 48 degrees. A frost of three degrees was recorded in the Botanic gardens yesterday morning and one degree was recorded at the airport. A light north-westerly wind in the morning changed to a light north-easterly in the afternoon. Noon Weather Noon weather yesterday:— Auckland 59, cloudy: Wellington 52, cloudy; Christchurch 48, cloudy; Dunedin 46, cloudy.—(P.A.)
