Linwood In Good Hands
TV (CHATTEL) Hayes ’’is perhaps best remembered for his deeds as a batsman, bowler and
wicket-keeper in Canterbury cricket teams between 1909 and 1928 and the fact that, at 77, he is the oldest active cricketer in Canterbury.
But there is another field of endeavour in which he has given long and ungrudging service. He has earned the gratitude of members of Linwood senior Rugby teams since 1949 for his efforts as team masseur.
A great deal of the credit for the high degree of fitness achieved by the men under his care must go to Chattel Hayes, with his little bag of personally prepared liniments, plasters * and everything else a Rugby player might require.
On bleak winter evenings or cold blustery afternoons he is always at his post; he has never missed a training session or a match. He is a gentleman to all who know him and a shining example of dedication to sport.
