New President
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. Mr R. A. Whyte, of Wellington, defeated Mr R. I. Sewell (Wanganui) in an election yesterday to become the new president of the Racing Conference. In another election, Mr H. H. Smith (Hawke’s Bay) became the vice-president. He was opposed by Mr E. H. Nolan, of Auckland. Mr Sewell declined nomination for the vice-presidency. Mr Whyte succeeds Mr G. H. Grigg as conference president Mr Grigg, who had been president since 1956, has been in indifferent health for some time. “Mr Grigg has worked like a nigger in the interests of racing,” Mr Whyte said in a tribute yesterday. Tributes were also paid to the retiring vice-president (Dr. A. McGregor Grant of Auckland) and the retiring secretary (Mr A. M. Mcßeath). “There are two names in racing which are synonymous, and they are the conference and Mcßeath,” Mr Grigg said in his president’s report.
The conference's new executive comprises Messrs E. H. Nolan (Auckland Racing Club), D. W. J. Gould (Canterbury Jockey Club), R. C. B. Greensland (Dunedin Jockey Club), J. C. Craig (Greymouth), G. H. Morgan (Hawke’s Bay-, W. H. Thompson (Southland), C. H. Wynard (Taranaki), F. C. Johnston (Waikato), R. I. Sewell (Wanganui), and I. D. Reid (Wellington).
