Council Of Churches Thanked For Help

The appointment of a New I Zealand farmer to work in a large Indian land reclamation ! project was expected soon, the 1 general secretary of the Na-; tion Council of Churches (the! Rev. D. M. Taylor) reported to the monthly meeting of the! council's executive. The names of three applicants have been forwarded to Assam for consideration. The council received a report from the Rev. L. Tauroa,! the first Maori minister to be! appointed to an overseas post by the churches of New Zea-! land. He will return home this j week after two years and a| half in Indonesia. Mr Tauroa served as a student counsellor at the Chris-! tian University, Salatiga, and lived at the Students’ Centre, Bandung. “Students in Indonesia are expected to and encouraged to contribute to the political life of the nation so that even the Student Christian Movement is active in political! matters in which it was not] possible or advantageous for! a foreigner to take part,” Mr! Tauroa reported. Several letters of thanks fori financial aid were received by! the executive. The women’s! committee of the council I wrote thanking the council for a grant in aid of sending two! delegates to the Asian Church i Women's Conference in Japan! this month.

Mrs R- M. Rogers and Mrs R .H. T. Hamilton are on their ft-ay to the conference. Letters were also received from Dr. J. F. Dick, of the United States Mission to Nepal for a contribution to the Okhuldunga dispensary; the Church of Christ, Thailand for a grant to the rural life loan project: the Geneva headquarters of the Y.M.C.A. for a contribution to the industrial girls’ project in Beirut: the United States National Council of Churches for financial assistance in the Mississippi delta project: Major S. D. Blhart, of Trinity College, Kandy, Ceylon, for relief; and the Burma Christian Council for assistance with a resettlement programme of 117 families. Mr Taylor also reported that the council had received a gift of £5OO from an anonymous North Island woman. He believed it to be the largest gift from a living person received by the council. It will be used for famine relief. The council agreed to accept the financial cost of printing the special series of “Lenten Studies” which will be used from February 12 to Easter. It will be the first time that such a study has been organised nationally and promoted hv the council.
