80-MILE RACE
Tabak May Take Time
A prelude to the Round the Gorges much later in the season, the Papanui Cycling Club’s 80-mile Shirley Lodge classic is as difficult to predict as any of this season’s major races.
It will start at 10 this! morning from the sponsors inMarshland road, and will travel along Tram road, through the inland Canterbury areas of Oxford, Ashley Gorge, Glentui and Loburn. The riders will pass through Rangiora and Woodend before finishing at the start. There are riders on virtually every mark who are capable of winning, but again T. J. Tabak (Avon) appears sure of taking fastest time. It is his last race before leaving for the Empire Games.
As far out as 80min, one of the two veterans of the field, G. McGregor (Christchurch), could hold on to win if the conditions are good. A scratch rider, J. H. Cleary, looks the biggest threat to Tabak taking time for the second year.
