31 BRAVERY AWARDS
Royal Humane Society
Thirty-one awards were made for bravery last year by the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand, according to the annual report of the society which was presented to the annual meeting by the President (Sir Joseph Ward) in Christchurch yesterday. The awards included one gold medal, one silver medal, 14 bronze medals, nine certificates of merit, four letters of recommendation, and two in memoriam certificates.
The gold medal was awarded to Anthony E. Johns for his bravery at Oakura beach, Taranaki, when he made on unsuccessful attempt to rescue the victim of a shark attack from the surf. Officers elected yesterday were:—Patron, the GovernorGeneral (Sir Bernard Fergusson); vice-patron, Mr Justice Macarthur; president, Sir Joseph Ward; vice-president, Mr C. A. Cooper; court of directors, Messrs E. B. E. Taylor, J. L. Will, E. T. Beaven, M. Whatman, A. I. Cottrell, A. F. T Stokes, G. G. Turbott, and Brigadier J. T. Burrows: honorary auditors, Hoare, Taylor and Quirk; secretary, Mr C. H. Francis.
