SEARCHIN BUSH
New Plymouth Escapers (N.Z. Press Association' NEW PLYMOUTH, July 15. Police were searching in dense bush late tonight for three prisoners who escaped from the New Plymouth Prison at 5.35 p.m. and were thought to be trapped in a rugged valley on the northern outskirts of New Plymouth. The police dog Echo picked up the scent of one of the men behind a house near Smith road in Mangorei road and the search was concentrated in that area.
Taking part in the search are 32 policemen, assisted by traffic officers and prison warders.
They formed road blocks from every outlet from the city and as far south as Patea. Men on foot and in cars are posted at every point where the men are likely to escape from the search area.
The missing men are Raymond Lester Murray, Owen Francis McCauley, and lan Rangitaniwha Peina, alias Piena, all aged 25. Peina has the word “undesirable” tattooed on the front of his neck.
