Licensing Laws
Sir, —Just think of . the young people reading the news item, “Church Support for Longer Bar Hours.” They would immediately think: what is wrong with drinking when even the church people believe in it? Are we fair to our children by not warning them when young of the dangers of alcoholism? Senior pupils in our schools should have lessons explaining the disastrous effects of alcohol on the human body. A tipsy drinker has more chance of arriving home safely in the daylight than at night, when he would also be a menace to other drivers. Since the taking of alcohol has been so widespread in New Zealand, crime of all kinds has increased at an alarming rate, with consequent great expense to our country. In Sydney, which has had 10 o’clock closing for some years, the present “vice boom” has earned it the title of “the most sinning city.”—Yours, etc., PRO BONO PUBLICO. July 14, 1966.
